Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time employment 18 months with access as soon as possible or by agreement

The Division of Microsystems Engineering at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering conducts research on the use of microsystems in a variety of scientific fields, from biology to space technology. Common to all research is the desire to investigate how the properties of systems change when they are made smaller, and how these properties can be used to create simpler, cheaper and above all more functional technology.

Project description: Two of our projects are about technology development of microfluidic extensible electronics – printed circuit boards, sensors and actuators. In a more general sense, a stretchable substrate based on a new soft and stretchable silicone material provides compatible and comfortable, smart and wireless patches that do not move in relation to the tissue even during larger movements. These smart patches are used on the skin or for health, sports and medical technology. We have developed the basic technology for extensible circuit boards, where liquid-based alloys allow rigid components to be embedded without getting contact errors during prolonged dynamic elongation.

Within the projects, we work with medical technology with partners in Europe, but most intensively with partners at our university, KTH and the company Mycronic in Täby.

Work Duties: Assist research in the subject. The work is based on our previous research and will develop new ways of manufacturing stretchable electronics. The work will be carried out in a wide range of scientific areas, focusing on microsystem technology but linking to wireless technology and application demonstrations. The work will be carried out in a very interdisciplinary environment where close contacts with companies are an important prerequisite.

Qualification requirements: Master's degree in Engineering, or equivalent, with a focus on materials science or microsystems technology. We require basic knowledge and experience in microsystems technology.

We require good oral and written knowledge in English.

Additional qualifications: It is a strong merit to have knowledge and experience in the manufacture of microsystems in soft materials, and especially for stretchable electronics.

You must be purposeful, structured and be able to work effectively both individually and in groups.

Application:

Your application must include: a personal letter describing you, your understanding of the task and why you are suitable for this position (max 2 pages), CV (max 2 pages), copies of diploma and other relevant documents, name and contact details (address, e-mail address and telephone number) of at least two reference persons

Salary: Individual salary setting.

Starting date: As soon as possible or by appointment.
