Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time employment for 7,5 months starting in August

The Department of Materials Science aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on materials science solutions to important societal challenges.

This position is advertised within the EMBLA research group, which is led by Professor Maria Tenje. The research environment focuses on researching new and developing existing microsystems that enable basic scientific research in the life sciences.

Further information about the research group is available on the website: www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/embla

Work duties: Research in the so-called organs-on-chip system where cells can be cultured under controlled conditions. Specifically, the goal is to develop microfluidic systems with integrated electrodes that can be used to measure growth rate and barrier formation of endothelial cells as a model of the blood-brain barrier. The group has recently developed a new electrical measurement method to increase the information density in the measurement data and your task during this short employment is to optimize the electrical model and demonstrate a practical biological application of the method.

The research places great demands on creativity, analytical ability and practical skills in microsystem technology and integrated electronics. In addition to research, communication of research results is also included as an important element in the employment.

Qualification requirements: Doctoral degree in technical physics, materials science, nanotechnology, medical technology or equivalent education in an adjacent area as well as solid knowledge and many years of experience in microsystem technology and integrated electronics. Documented experience in electrical modelling to evaluate biological systems is a requirement. Excellent knowledge and documented experience in the manufacture of microsystems are also requirements.

We require good oral and written knowledge of English. We attach great importance to your personal qualities and you should be self-sufficient, have achieved scientific maturity and possess a strong inner motivation to succeed in your research. It is important that you are pedagogical, structured and that you can work effectively both individually and in groups.

As this is a shorter employment with high goals, we are looking for a person who will be able to quickly and efficiently begin the experimental work and carry out the project's goals during the allotted time.

How to apply:

Your application must include:

1) A short letter describing yourself, your research interests and why you are suitable for this position.

2) CV (max. 2 pages)

3) A copy of your doctoral degree and your course grades

4) Names and contact details (address, e-mail address and telephone number) of at least two reference persons

5) List of relevant publications
