Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time employment for two years starting in September 2021 or by agreement

The Division of Applied Mechanics is a part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Uppsala University. In addition to teaching, our work deals with both fundamental and applied research. The research is related to load-carrying materials and structures, and is based both on experimental investigations and on numerical modelling. The purpose is to be able to design new materials and components with improved mechanical performance.

Project description:

The division carries out several research projects that concern a combination of experimental investigations and numerical calculations for various materials and applications. A common denominator for the projects are methods based on full-field measurements using X-ray computed tomograph or digital speckle photography, followed by image analysis in 2D or 3D and prediction using finite element methods which are compared to direct experimental measurements. This combination of methods is inherently cross-disciplinary, and could potentially be used in materials design. It demands validation, and the method development is an important research field in its own right, which could unlock breakthroughs in systematic materials design of e.g. composites, polymers and other combined materials.

Work duties:

The work duties concerns primarily to develop combined experimental-numerical methods and validate these together with colleagues at the division. The work duties also include the responsibility for and development of the concerned experimental mechanical equipment. To a lesser extent, contributions to teaching can occur, specifically in the laboratory and related calculations. Publications of scientific papers and general dissemination of achieved results is also a part of the work duties.

Qualification requirements:

To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree.  The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, etc.

This position requires a doctoral degree in solid mechanics or related fields.

We require the ability to work focused, structured and with foresight, both individually and in groups, and to be able to collaborate in a transdisciplinary environment with colleagues both within and outside the division.

Additional qualifications: It is meriting to have a solid background in experimental mechanics, image analysis in 3D, finite-element methods and mechanical testing.

Instructions for application: Your application must contain:

  • An introductory letter describing you, your understanding of the task, and motivating why you are appropriate for this position. (Max 2 pages)
  • CV (max 2 pages)
  • Copies of your PhD exam, course grades and other relevant credits
  • A list of publications
  • Copies of your three most relevant publications
  • Names and contact details (address, e-mail address and telephone number) of at least two reference persons.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: September 2021.

Type of employment: Temporary position two years according to central collective agreement.

Scope of employment: 100 %
