Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is hosting the FREIA Division responsible for the FREIA Laboratory, where research is performed towards future particle accelerators and instrumentation. The FREIA laboratory operates complex equipment such as superconducting cryostats and microwave equipment for developing and testing particle accelerator instrumentation. Current projects are related to the: European Spallation Source (ESS), MAX IV Laboratory, High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN, development of free-electron lasers, and development of a compact X-ray laser and instrumentation in Uppsala.

The candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area in physics and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading groups in experimental physics and engineering.

Subject Description: The FREIA Laboratory is engaged in the development of superconducting magnets in collaboration with Swedish industry and CERN, Switzerland. The successful candidate will work on three projects: (i) development of a canted-cosine-theta type dipole magnet for future use in the LHC or medical accelerators; (ii) vertical cold test of several superconducting magnets for the LHC; (iii) development of a magnetic field measurement bench for a vertical cryostat.

Work Description: Magnetic design and quench simulations of superconducting magnets. Supervise construction in industry of the canted-cosine-theta magnet. Test of superconducting magnets in a vertical cryostat at FREIA. Development of a magnetic field measurement bench for use with the vertical cryostat. Regular presentations of the results in the presence of specialists on different topics, in Uppsala or at other laboratories. Assist in the overall development and evaluation of instrumentation and experiments at the FREIA Laboratory. Actively contribute to outlook activities and education and supervision of students. Regular travel is required for national and international projects.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in physics or a related area, with experience in superconducting magnets. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

You shall demonstrate a drive and determination to achieve results, be open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned. You shall take responsibility, shall organize multiple tasks simultaneously, and have a genuine interest in research and technology.

The following knowledge, experience and competencies are required:

  • Knowledge of superconducting magnets.
  • Willing to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Effective ability to lead work.
  • Ability to read and understand technical information.
  • Ability to communicate well both technically and at a general scientific level.
  • Ability to produce good written work and reports.
  • Available for short travels and occasional stays elsewhere.
  • Good oral and written proficiency in English.

Additional qualifications:

  • Oral and written proficiency in Swedish.
  • Experience with cold test of superconducting magnets.
  • Experience with magnetic field measurement.

Application Procedure: The application shall be submitted in Swedish or English and must include a brief description of your research interests, relevant knowledge, relevant experience, relevant competencies, CV, copies of certificates, diplomas and other documents which the applicant wishes to claim. The applicant shall clearly identify peer-reviewed publications and provide names and contact details of at least two referees and/or attach recommendation letters.
