Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences

The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with more than 250 employees and over 300 additional coworkers connected via the Uppsala University Hospital. The Department of Medical Sciences has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of different areas. The research carried out at the department is performed in close connection with the clinical activities at the Uppsala University Hospital, which includes both basic studies on the causes of a variety of illnesses and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More information about the Department of Medical Sciences can be found at www.medsci.uu.se

Duties/Project description: You will work in an interdisciplinary team at Uppsala University, Lexington Biomedical Research Institute and Karolinska Institutet in a project awarded research grants from the American NIH that aims to investigate molecular mechanisms in severe chronic pain conditions. The focus of the project is on investigating the role of the proteins MIF and HMGB1 in the development of hyperalgesia (increased pain sensitivity) in so-called Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS).

You will use high-resolution mass spectrometry-based proteomics, bioinformatics and other molecular tools to investigate mechanisms in vivo and to monitor and validate results. The work will primarily be conducted in Kim Kultima's research group in close collaboration with Camilla Svensson's research group at Karolinska Institutet, but trips to the USA within the project may also be relevant.

You will work closely with technicians, chemists, mass spectrometry experts, bioinformaticians and preclinical and clinical researchers with a mission to increase our ability to study pain from a translational aspect.

A significant part of the work consists of writing scientific research pbilications, reports, presenting results at internal and external meetings. Supervision of students may also occur.

Qualification requirements: Doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is judged to correspond to a doctoral degree in molecular biology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, or a related field where mass spectrometry-based proteomics is included and / or pain signaling. Experience in mass spectrometry, including sample preparation and data analysis is a requirement. Very good, documented, knowledge of English in speech and writing is a requirement. The person we are looking for must be very motivated and organized. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability such as team spirit, flexibility, ability to prioritize, quality awareness and previous experience of running projects. You are easy to work with and enjoy working both independently and in small project groups.

Good recommendations from previous supervisors / postdoctoral stays are a requirement.

Desirable / other merit: Direct experience of working with Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry or other types of mass spectrometric instruments is desirable. Practical experience of statistical and bioinformatics analyzes of mass spectrometry data, especially proteomics data, as well as knowledge of using R or Python is also an advantage.
