Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

The research program in Chemical and Bio-Molecular Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University, focuses on understanding the fundamental properties and ultrafast processes of matter at the atomic length and time scales of Ångströms and femtoseconds. The program has a leading position in the use of X-ray photon science for probing atoms, molecules and chemical and biomolecular systems. Research within the program addresses fundamental questions concerning the interaction of light and matter and aims at revealing how the properties of a system result from its electronic structure and dynamics with applications in environmental, biophysical and chemical systems.

Duties: We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with very good experimental skills and with proven and extensive experience in spectroscopy with femtosecond and picosecond x-ray pulses. The goal is to apply time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy to molecules in the gas phase and metal complexes in solution. Ultrashort x-ray pulses from lab-based, synchrotron radiation and x-ray free-electron laser sources will be combined to probe bonding and dynamics. One aim for the candidate is to develop and build a set up for time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with time-of-flight techniques for our femtosecond high-order harmonic generation source in our laboratory at Uppsala University. In parallel, the candidate will participate in our measurement campaigns on time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy at synchrotron radiation and x-ray free-electron laser sources. The work will be performed in close collaboration with other groups at Uppsala University and with collaborating partners in Germany and elsewhere in Europe and in the world.

The project will be carried out in the group of Prof. Philippe Wernet.

Requirements: The holder of the position as researcher must have a PhD degree in physics or equivalent. Extra attention will be paid to scientific skills. The candidate must have proven and extensive experience in soft x-ray spectroscopy with high-order harmonic generation and synchrotron radiation sources. Extensive experience in building and using set ups for soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with time-of-flight techniques is required. Fluency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite.

The application, in English, shall include a personal application letter, a curriculum vitae, a copy of your PhD degree, names of at least two references from academia, personal circumstances that may affect our judgement of your qualifications, a list of publications, and any other documentation that you want us to consider.

Additional qualifications: Experience with spectroscopy at x-ray free-electron laser sources and time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy are highly rated. Experience with x-ray spectroscopy of molecules in the gas phase and experience with amplified femtosecond laser systems will be considered in addition.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 01-09-2021 or as otherwise agreed.
