Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Cell and Molecular Biology department at Uppsala University has a strong and international research and teaching environment and is organized in six major research programs; Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology, Structure and Molecular Biology. In total the department has over 200 scientists, including 60 PhD students.

The position is with the research group of Bengt Persson in the ICM Programme of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.

Duties/Project description: The research project is focused on gene expression analysis of heart tissue related to different types of heart failure. Bioinformatics analysis of differently expressed genes including functional characterisations and regulation of metabolic networks. In addition, we will analyse biomarkers and proteomics data. Our research group is also looking at new methods for bioinformatics characterisation and subdivision of large protein families.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a post-doc, you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. 

Previous experience of working with NGS data and bioinformatics analyses. Experience of Linux command-line environment (*sh), and a scripting language such as Python or Perl is necessary. Experience of R and Bioconductor is also necessary. The applicant must have a good ability to work independently as well as in a group. Excellent written and oral knowledge of English is required, as the work takes place in an international environment.
