The Department of Economics is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences with approximately 100 employees from a dozen countries. Each year about 1,000 students participate in undergraduate (BA), graduate (MA) and PhD level courses. The research conducted at the department is mainly focused on labour economics, macroeconomics, political economics and public economics. The department has responsibility for teaching in financial economics and conducts research within the field, often in the borderland with macroeconomics. Researchers at the department are frequently engaged as experts by the government and by the media, and interact with the society at large in a number of ways.

Research expertise: Research expertise refers to research qualifications. When assessing research expertise, special emphasis will be placed on research qualifications in macro- and financial economics. In the assessment of research expertise, primary consideration will be given to research quality. Importance will also be given to the independence and scope of research, in terms of both breadth and depth. Supervision of PhD-students will be given special emphasis.

Teaching expertise: Teaching expertise will be assessed as carefully as research expertise. Teaching skills refer to educational qualifications and teaching experience, and teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be afforded consideration. Special emphasis will be placed on teaching experiences and ability to teach in macro- and financial economics, especially the latter.

Administrative skills and other proficiencies are also valuable for the position and will be given due weight. Administrative skills are demonstrated, among other things, through the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work effectively and in a purpose-adapted manner.

Qualifications should be documented so that both quality and scope can be assessed.

Additionally, special emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and education within macro- and financial economics.

When Uppsala University appoints new teachers, the applicants selected are those who, following a qualitative total assessment of expertise and merits, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and contribute to a positive development of the department.

The applicant should therefore submit a list of referees with insight into the applicant’s professional skill as well as personal qualities that may be of relevance for the position, e.g. ability to cooperate, ability to lead and working methods.
