Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a researcher position in ion beam-based physics, to work within energy-related research questions in two specific projects in the ion physics group within the division of applied nuclear physics: On the one hand, the candidate is expected to work within the research group’s activities on advanced characterization of energy storage materials and photochromic as well as photocatalytic thin film systems with focus on understanding the role of light chemical species in the functionality of the materials. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to take responsibility for research efforts in studying plasma-wall interaction as relevant for future fusion devices. In both projects, ion-beam analysis, also using in-situ approaches will be the main working tool. Furthermore, materials modification using ion beams, as well as more fundamental studies on ion-solid interaction will be performed.

The major ion beam facilities at the Tandem laboratory at Uppsala University comprise of a 5 MV tandem accelerator, ion implantation facilities with three beam lines as well as a system for low-energy ion scattering. Participation in interdisciplinary materials research investigations using MeV and keV ion beams using this instrumentation by the successful applicant will be appreciated.

(Co-)supervision of student projects can be part of the working duties.

Prerequisites:  The holder of a position as researcher must have a PhD degree or equivalent.   Well-documented research experience using ion beams for material research, fundamental studies or materials modifications is expected. A good fundamental understanding of ion-solid interaction is required. Experience in thin film technology is considered to be of advantage.

The department strives for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff. Thus, female applicants are especially encouraged.  Sweden has a generous welfare system that includes paid parental leave, affordable daycare and practically free medical care.

The application should contain a letter describing the applicant and her/his qualifications and research interests. It should contain a CV, copies of relevant degrees, contact information for at least two reference persons, and a full publication list. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 01-09-2021 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Permanent position, probationary period may be applied.
