Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department"s programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science (LUVAL) encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. The research in Physical Geography focuses on cryospheric sciences and climate change on the Quaternary/ Anthropocene timeline. We have a position open as a researcher in remote sensing of snow over the period 1 September 2021 to 31 August 2022.

Description of project: The position is a part of the Vinnova funded research project ‘SnowSat-an AI approach towards efficient hydropower production’. The project is a cooperation between Uppsala University, Mälardalen University, and Umeälvens vattenregleringsföretag (hydropower industry).

Duties: The primary objective of this position is to develop improved remote sensing algorithms for better quantifying the seasonal snow water storage in mountain regions.

The main research tasks include the use of spaceborne microwave observations (both active and passive) in combination with UAV measurements and ground observations to determine the snow water storage at improved accuracy and spatial resolution. There are possibilities for field work as part of the work tasks.

Requirements: PhD in Geoinformatics, Physical Geography or related disciplines with a remote sensing focus. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English, and show a track record of publications in relevant fields. The successful candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and to contribute to the development of the project.

Additional qualifications: Knowledge in active and passive microwave remote sensing is wanted. Experiences in remote sensing of cryosphere, UAV measurements, photogrammetry, snow hydrology, and machine learning are considered as merits.

Application must include a CV (including a list of your full publications), copies of diplomas, and a personal letter describing your relevant experience, research interests, and motivation to apply for the position (maximum 2 pages). The application should also contain the contact information or letters from at least two references.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.

Starting date: 2021-09-01 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of position: Temporary position according to central collective agreement.

Scope of employment: 100 %
