Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic
departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the
atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department"s programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in
meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography.

Description: We are looking for a research engineer to the marine ICOS station Östergarnsholm in the Baltic Sea. The main task of the position will be to participate in the development and maintenance of the monitoring site. A major part of the work includes supervision, calibration and maintenance of field equipment and data handling (transfer, quality check and deliveries). The work includes daily routines as well as temporary intensive campaigns. There may also be participation in other, relevant research projects. The station is situated on the island Östergarnsholm, east of Gotland. The position is based in Uppsala, but requires regular travelling to Gotland.

ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System

- is a new European research infrastructure for quantifying and understanding the greenhouse gas balance of the European continent and of adjacent regions. The infrastructure is built up as a collaboration of nationally operated measurement stations in 17 European countries. ICOS Sweden  is the Swedish contribution to this European effort. High-precision, standardized observations of the exchange of greenhouse gases and heat between the Earth"s surface and its atmosphere form an essential basis for understanding of our planet"s present, past and future climate. The aim of ICOS is therefore to construct, equip and operate a network of standardized long-term, high precision integrated monitoring stations for atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations and fluxes of for example CO2 and CH4. ICPS are presently also expanding to include a marine component.

Duties:  The main task of the position will be to participate in the development and maintenance of the monitoring site. A major part of the work includes supervision, calibration and maintenance of field equipment and data handling (transfer, quality check and deliveries). The work includes daily routines as well as temporary intensive campaigns. There may also be participation in other, relevant research projects.

Requirements:  The positions require an academic exam in natural/technical science including one or several of the subjects micrometeorology, physical geography, environmental physics and measurements technology focusing biogeochemical, marine chemistry or oceanography. A drivers licence.

Additional qualifications: A Ph.D. within one of the above fields of science is an advantage but not required. Experience in micro-meteorological methods, automated systems for biochemical research and field measurements, ability to climb meteorological towers, experience in working in marine environments and experiences in computing and data management are also considered an advantage. Collaborative competence and ability to structure and prioritize working tasks efficiently are important personal qualifications. The ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English is also important, and an advantage if in Swedish as well.
