Uppsala University, Institute for Housing and Urban Research

The Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF) is a multidisciplinary research institute with a focus on housing and urban issues. IBF belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University and conducts research, in a broad sense, directed towards housing, the built environment, and urban issues. The institute employs around 45 people, among which the majority are researchers and PhD students. IBF's goal is to produce interesting and relevant social research of the highest international quality within its thematic area. More information about the institute can be found at www.ibf.uu.se.

Economic History is an established discipline at IBF. In recent years, research has foremost been undertaken in relation to early modern dwelling and working conditions. Presently, there is an ambition to widen this profile, and also study Swedish urbanization from the early twentieth century until the present times. The ambition is to link this theme to research done at the Urban Lab, a multidisciplinary initiative created at IBF together with the department of Economics and Uppsala municipality, on questions about towns, cities and the process of urbanization.

Duties/Project description: The holder of this post doc position in economic history shall undertake research in a self-chosen theme, but within the frames set by IBF’s themes around living arrangements, building and cities. Preferably, the chosen theme is linked to the urbanization of modern Sweden, and it can have a qualitative as well as a quantitative approach. Included in the position is 10% teaching at the department of economic history.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in economic history. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Full application should include:

  • CV
  • Copy of the PhD degree
  • A research plan that onlines research questions and motivates and describes key aspects of the theoretical and empirical approach. It should also describe how the planned research fits into the housing and urban research field. (Maximum 2,000 words)
