Uppsala University, Department of Medicinal Chemistry

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry conducts research in the field of drug development, which includes organic synthesis, drug design and pharmaceutical physical and analytical chemistry. The department is responsible for teaching drug-related subjects in several programs, for example in the pharmacist program and the prescription program. The department has about 85 employees and here doctoral students, teachers, researchers and administrators work closely together in a creative and open environment. More information about the department and its teaching is available at www.ilk.uu.se.

We are seeking an individual for a research position focused on the synthesis of small molecule therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2. The successful applicant will work in the Drug Design and Drug Development research group (ILK) and will be supervised by Assoc. Sen. Lecturer Lindon Moodie and Assoc. Prof. Anja Sandström.

Duties: The researcher will participate in a collaborative research project aimed at developing drug candidates against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Work will involve compound synthesis, as well as further optimization of compounds as drug candidates. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with researcher within early drug discovery such as other organic chemists, researchers in computational drug design, biochemistry, and microbiology.

The main tasks of the candidate will primarily focus on small molecule organic synthesis, including compound purification and characterization. The position also requires detailed documentation of laboratory work, as well as contributing towards structure activity interpretation and compound design. The researcher will be expected to contribute towards manuscript preparation, to report results at collaborator meetings and participate in group and department seminars. Work assignments may also include mentoring of research students and participating in shared responsibilities within ILK, e.g. service and maintenance of equipment and instruments.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in the field of organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry.
  • A strong background and track record in synthetic organic chemistry is required.

Merits:
