Uppsala University, Department of ALM

In recent years the ongoing digitalisation of society has increasingly affected the methodologies, approaches and critical perspectives of the humanities and social sciences.

Digital Humanities (DH) is an area of scholarly activity at the intersection of computing or digital technologies and disciplines of the arts, humanities and social sciences. It includes the systematic use of digital resources in the humanities, as well as the analysis of their application. DH is based on interdisciplinary collaboration and a willingness to work across disciplinary, institutional as well as national boundaries.

The Centre for Digital Humanities at Uppsala University (CDHU) leads and curates the digital transformation of the humanities and social sciences at the university. CDHU is placed within the Department of ALM (Archival science, Library & information science, and Museum & heritage studies). The common core of the ALM disciplines is the study of information processes: acquiring, selecting, arranging, describing, preserving, and communicating different kinds of information and cultural heritage.

CDHU’s assignments are threefold:

  1. research-initiating activities (seminars, workshops and major events) as well as support for individual projects and applications
  2. pedagogy and knowledge exchange, including initiating, developing and supporting education in Digital Humanities from master's level to doctoral researchers; and
  3. the development of a technical infrastructure to support research in the field of DH.

CDHU is currently governed by a director and supported by a deputy director and a research coordinator. The operation is supported by a steering board that spans distinguished professors across the disciplinary domains of Humanities and Social Sciences
