Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and distinguished molecular bioscience departments in Europe. The department comprises six research programs with about 130 employees. Please read more at (http://www.icm.uu.se).

The group of Magnus Johansson seeks a doctoral student to join the team. The group is located at the Biomedical Center (BMC) in Uppsala (http://www.bmc.uu.se), in the immediate vicinity of the Uppsala node of Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) (http://www.scilifelab.se), a national infrastructure that provides service in genomics, bioinformatics and related areas in life science. The research in Johansson’s group is focused on protein synthesis, and they develop new fluorescence based methods to study protein synthesis kinetics directly inside living bacterial cells.

General description: The aim of the PhD project, which is part of an ongoing project in the lab, is to find the key parameters defining the efficiency of mRNA translation and co- or post-translational targeting and processing of polypeptides inside the living cell. In order to achieve this, the current experimental and analytical systems for single-molecule tracking in the lab need to be further developed and extended. This work includes, e.g., fluorescence labeling of key components of the protein synthesis machinery, but also analysis of data and mathematical modelling of reaction-diffusion systems.

Duties: The Ph.D. student shall primarily focus on postgraduate studies, but other duties related to teaching and administrative work may be included in the work description up to a maximum of 20 % of the time. Information about doctoral education, eligibility requirements and admission rules can be found at the faculty website, http://www.teknat.uu.se/utbildning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva/.

Requirements: The applicant must have a master's degree in Molecular Biotechnology/Biophysics or within another subject which the employer considers to be equivalent. Documented experience with practical lab work as well as computer programming is a requirement. The applicant must have good ability to work independently as well as in a group. Good written and oral knowledge in English is a prerequisite, as the work takes place in an international environment.

Merits: Knowledge of and experience in mathematical modelling and single-molecule fluorescence microscopy is desirable but not required to be considered for the position.

The application: Your application must include:

  • A cover letter where you describe yourself, your research interest, your experiences and why you are interested in the position (max. 2 pages).
  • A CV containing your education, list of publications and other qualifications, and copies of diplomas.
  • Please provide contact information to reference persons and/or recommendation letters from prior research supervisors.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: As soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.

Scope of employment: 100 %

For further information about the position please contact: Magnus Johansson, m.johansson@icm.uu.se. For administrative questions contract HR-generalist Frida Österdahl, frida.osterdahl@icm.uu.se.

Please submit your application by 17 May 2021, UFV-PA 2021/1704.
