The employment is part of the research group UGHRIS (Uppsala Global Health Research in Implementation and Sustainability) at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health. The research group conducts transdisciplinary research on global health and sustainable development (https://www.kbh.uu.se/research/ghris/).

This position is partly funded by the Uppsala Antibiotic Center (UAC), and the recruited PhD student will be part of UAC’s graduate research school. UAC is a center for research, education, innovation & awareness founded in 2015 to bring together, stimulate and support important research on antibiotic resistance from all three disciplinary domains at Uppsala University: Medicine and Pharmacy, Science and Technology, and Humanities and Social Sciences. The doctoral student positions and graduate school are central parts of UAC with the goal of educating a new generation of researchers with broad knowledge and willingness to contribute to combating the problem of antibiotic resistance. Duties/Project description: The PhD project focuses on understanding the implications of sustainable development for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Specifically, the project will compare the impact of major types of interventions and policies related to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with more targeted conventional interventions on antimicrobial resistance. The project will use and mix theory and qualitative and quantitative methods from both sustainability science and global health. These include content analysis, qualitative comparative analysis, network analysis and generalized statistical modelling. The project is a collaboration between UGHRIS and the research programme Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere (GEDB), based at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University.

The position also includes to participate in and finalize research applications. Teaching as part of the PhD training is expected (up to 120 hours in total according to local regulations).

Requirements: The candidate who will be offered the position should have:

  • A Master’s degree in a for the project relevant area, i.e. public or global health, sustainability science, environmental science, sociology, geography, or similar, or a medical exam.
  • An interest in antimicrobial resistance and sustainable development.
  • Experience from collecting, organizing or handling quantitative and qualitative data with different software, e.g. R, SPSS, MaxQDA, or Excel.
  • High proficiency of spoken and written English
  • Proof of independence and participation in previous research projects

Ability to collaborate, work independently and individual suitability will be given priority.

Additional qualifications: Favorable for the position are:

  • Experience in writing research applications
  • Experience and knowledge about research methods to be used within the project, such as handling and analysis of large datasets, systematic reviews and qualitative analysis
  • Research experience within sustainable development or antimicrobial resistance
  • Experience of working with scripting-based statistical software such as R or Python.
  • Experience of academic publishing

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
 
Starting date: 01-09-2021 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.

Scope of employment: 100 %, with possibility to part-time in combination with clinical duties.
