Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The Department is located in the Ångström Laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in leading national and international research projects, access to experimental and computing infrastructures, opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. Duties/project description: The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in observational astrophysics. The positions are hosted by the Astronomy and Space Physics division.

The first postdoctoral fellow is expected to work on projects related to current research themes of the observational astronomy group (www.physics.uu.se/research/astronomy-and-space-physics/research). These research topics include observational characterization of exoplanet atmospheres, studies of stellar activity and magnetic fields, investigations of atmospheres and chemical composition of late-type stars, star formation history of galaxies and some aspects of observational cosmology. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to actively contribute to collection and analysis of observations using telescopes of the European Southern Observatory and other facilities.

The second postdoctoral fellow is expected to work on stars hosting exoplanets using the observations from the CRIRES+ exoplanet characterisation campaign and from the Terra Hunting Experiment survey with HARPS3 (www.terrahunting.org). The postdoctoral fellow is expected to actively contribute to collection, reduction and analysis of observations as well comparative study of the results.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Physics, Astronomy or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

Additional qualifications: For both positions, previous experience with observations and/or data reduction techniques will be considered given weight in the assessment.

Candidates applying for the second postdoctoral fellow should have experience with high-resolution echelle spectroscopy in terms of data reduction and analysis. Knowledge of advanced calibration techniques such as Laser Frequency Comb and experience working in the infrared spectral domain are especially welcome.

Your application should contain a letter describing yourself and your qualifications and research interests (max 2 pages). It should also contain a CV including contact information for at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone number), a copy of your PhD degree certificate, and a full publication list. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV. The application should be written in English. Please indicate if you are applying for the first or second postdoctoral position according to the descriptions given above.
