Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 260 employees and has a turnover just over 250 million SEK. At the department's seven programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Subject description: Within the Inorganic Chemistry research program, research is currently carried out on a wide range of inorganic materials, with many activities on thin film materials or surface processes such as corrosion. An essential part of this research is analysis of these materials and surfaces with spectroscopic methods, using techniques available at the Ångström laboratory, as well as techniques at large-scale (i.e. synchrotron) facilities. The latter in particular includes hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Much of the current research is centred on so-called multi-component materials (alloys, nitrides, and carbides), where the research is conducted in several interlinked projects with different principal investigators and PhD students. The researcher will work in this environment, collaborating within several different projects, but is also expected to drive own activities within the field of advanced materials analysis.

Work duties:

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Planning and conducting advanced materials characterisation both with local resources and at large-scale research facilities
  • Communicating research results by writing scientific articles in collaboration with other researchers
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Supervision of doctoral students
  • Teaching in the first and /or second cycles of studies
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Requirements:

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD within the field of materials chemistry, physics, or science, or a corresponding field
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • Significant experience of electron and X-ray spectroscopic techniques
  • Significant experience of surface analysis of multi-component materials
  • Experience in surface analysis in the context of corrosion studies

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional requirements: Experience of teaching in materials analysis and / or spectroscopic methods.
