Project description: We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Ph.D. student in quantum condensed matter theory for a studies of magnetism and collective phenomena. First and foremost the studies concern effects of ionic vibrations on, for instance, magnetic ordering, but also other ordered structures, for example, superconductivity, are of interest. The studies will be conducted through both analytical and numerical methods, where the student will be given large freedom to define suitable methods.
Research environment: The division of Materials theory at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for materials theory and quantum matter theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated and topological states of matter to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of a very broad range of functional materials. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about a third are Ph.D. students. The project will be carried out in the research group of Professor Jonas Fransson, currently consisting of one postdoc.
Employment: The position as a Ph.D. student is limited to four years of full-time studies, consisting of research and coursework. Other duties at the department, related to teaching and administration, may extend the position at a level of most 20%. Further information is available at www.physics.uu.se.
Application: The applicant should hold a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter theory or many-body theory. Good programming skills are advantageous. Fluency in both spoken and written English is an absolute prerequisite.
The application should include a personal letter, explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a Ph.D. degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. In addition, two letters of recommendation should be sent directly by the letter writer to jonas.fransson@physics.uu.se with the subject line “Letter of Recommendation, Ph.D. Position 2020”.
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
Starting date: 01-05-2021 or as otherwise agreed.
Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.
Scope of employment: 100 %
