Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology

UPPMAX (Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science, www.uppmax.uu.se) is a part of SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing, www.snic.se) tasked with providing large-scale resources for computation and data storage for Swedish scientists, as well as maintaining local large-scale resources for researchers at Uppsala University. Efficient utilisation of these resources requires advanced user support. UPPMAX currently has about 1500 active users from a wide variety of scientific disciplines which have a need for large-scale compute and storage of big data, such as e.g. bioinformatics and materials science. UPPMAX employs around 20 system- and application experts.

NBIS (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden) is a platform in SciLifeLab that provides support in bioinformatics and other life science “omics” fields. Compute and Storage is a unit in NBIS that is hosted by UPPMAX and supports the needs of the life science community at SNIC.

Application experts at UPPMAX are a varied group of about eight people who support researchers in their use of large-scale compute and storage resources at SNIC. The group works in coordination with the SNIC advanced user support, as well as the Compute and Storage unit in the SciLifeLab bioinformatics platform, NBIS.

Duties: The general tasks for the application expert group includes advanced user support, installation of software and database resources, maintenance and development of the digital research environment at UPPMAX and other SNIC partners, training of user groups on relevant topics, scripting of tools for external or internal use, and evaluation of project proposals and ongoing projects. This position will be placed partially in Compute and Storage, and may also assume responsibility for the maintenance of the ZINC chemical compound database and similar resources.

This position is open to a variety of backgrounds and competence areas within the wide life science domain. However, we are especially looking for application experts with competence or interest in AI/machine learning and GPU/accelerator technology.

Application experts are encouraged to develop their professional and technical skills to keep up with developments in their field, as well as expand their knowledge in other fields, according to the interest of the employee and needs of the user community.

Requirements: The applicant must have an education in a field where large-scale computation or big data are of central importance, good social skills, good teamwork, initiative-taking, and ability to work independently. The applicant must have good professional English skills, both verbal and written. Good Swedish skills are a merit. Personal suitability is also important.

The applicant must have documented experience in the following:

  • Linux (as a user)
  • Using a SNIC system or other cluster/HPC environment
  • Scripting in e.g. Bash, Python, and/or Perl

Additional qualifications: Documented experience in the following is a merit:

  • Handling of large-scale data and data management
  • Research in a HPC-related discipline
  • User support/research support
  • Teaching in higher education
  • Web development
  • ZINC database
  • AI/ML
  • GPU

Other relevant technical or scientific competence is also a merit. We aim to develop a wider pool of competences in the application expert group and welcome applications from all scientific disciplines.
