Uppsala University, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and teaching. The Department's research covers three collaborative and partially integrated sections: Cancer, infections and immunity as well as genetics and genomics. More info: http://www.imbim.uu.se/research-areas/.

National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS; http://nbis.se), is furthering life science research in Sweden by providing support and developing infrastructure in the field of bioinformatics. The organization is truly national, with 100 bioinformaticians, system developers and data stewards employed at multiple sites in Sweden. NBIS also constitutes the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab (http://www.scilifelab.se), a national resource which facilitates research in molecular biosciences by providing access to advanced technologies and technical know-how. With the close connections to data-producing facilities and daily interactions with leading research groups, NBIS is perfectly positioned to enable world class bioinformatics analyses.

NBIS is now looking for a new member (placed at IMBIM) to support Swedish researchers in genome-based bioinformatics (genomics). This person will strengthen our genome assembly and annotation team, with possibilities to participate also in large international efforts like the Earth Biogenome Project. The position is placed at Uppsala University in the creative environment of the SciLifeLab Uppsala node “The Hub”. Here more than 40 bioinformaticians and developers as well as core facilities and many different research groups are interacting.

In NBIS you will not be working in isolation, you will be a part of a team. With plenty of colleagues to bounce ideas and share knowledge with, as well as possibilities to participate in internal courses and of course learning from all the exciting support projects, NBIS is a place to grow as a bioinformatician. We welcome applications from all experienced bioinformaticians, also from those with no experience of genome annotation. There will be opportunities to learn, and the support needed to do so.

Job description: The main responsibility is giving support in bioinformatics to Swedish researchers under a “fee-for-service”-model. Work will involve annotation of eukaryote genomes, but could also, depending on the qualifications of the applicant, include other sequence-based bioinformatics, or programming. Responsibilities include running analyses, communication with clients, staying aware of current developments in the field, writing reports, and teaching.

Qualifications required: A PhD in bioinformatics, molecular biology, computer science or any related field. A strong and documented background in sequence-based bioinformatics (DNA or RNA) and ability to work efficiently in a Linux command-line environment. The ability to drive projects and work in a collaborative, yet service-minded environment is a must. Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English are required, since the candidate will collaborate with scientists of very different backgrounds. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for the position.

Qualifications desired: The position can potentially involve maintenance and development of scripts used in large scale annotation projects, and experience of programming in Perl/Python and experience of system administration is thus considered valuable. Experience in genome bioinformatics on non-model organisms is meriting, e.g., genome annotation, population genomics, comparative genomics, or genome assembly.

Pay: Individual salaries.

Starting: The position is available as soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Permanent position with a trial period of 6 months.

Working hours: 100 %.

For further information: About NBIS, please contact Professor Bengt Persson, mailto:bengt.persson@nbis.se, about the position, please contact Manager Dr. Henrik Lantz, mailto:henrik.lantz@nbis.se
