Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - BMC

A position as a researcher in protein crystallography is available at the Department of Chemistry-BMC, specify the program.

The Department of Chemistry-BMC carries out research and teaching in biochemistry, organic chemistry and analytical chemistry. It is international and has colleagues and students from the whole world. For more information: www.kemi.uu.se/bmc/.

Within the research program in biochemistry, studies of proteins are central and determination of their structures is an important part of many projects.

Project description: Production and structural determination of proteins and protein complexes.

Duties: Design and production of proteins for structure determination by X-ray crystallography. It covers all experimental steps for recombinant production of proteins, including vector design and molecular biology, as well as purification using different types of chromatographic methods, followed by characterization of the proteins' purity, stability and physicochemical properties and studies of their functional properties, e.g. enzyme analysis. The work also includes structural determination of proteins and proteins in complexes with small organic molecules, peptides and other biomolecules. It consists of crystallization, work at the synchrotron for data collection and solving structures from electron density maps with different techniques, visualization and interpretation of the structures and analysis of structure-function properties.

Qualifications required: A doctoral degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctoral degree in biochemistry or structural biology. In ranking eligible candidates special importance will be given to scientific skills. In the assessment of scientific merits, especially studies of proteins and enzymes, including molecular biological work, protein engineering, protein production and characterization, functional studies and X-ray crystallography of proteins will be highly valued. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as independence and ability to collaborate, as well as the ability to work with several projects in parallel and with several project leaders. Candidates must have an excellent ability to express themselves in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired: Experience of working with other types of biophysical techniques, e.g. biosensors, as well as in projects focusing on drug development, protein engineering and / or molecular recognition are desired.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 2021-05-01, or as agreed.

Position: The position is a temporary position until 2022-04-31 (or 12 months).

Scope of employment: 100%.

For further information about the position please contact: Professor responsible for the research program in biochemistry, Helena Danielson, helena.danielson@kemi.uu.se, +46 18 471 45 45.

Application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and why you want this position, 2) your CV, 3) a short description of your education, 4) a copy of your doctoral degree and course grades, 5) the names and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.), 6) a copy of your master thesis and 7) publications produced. The application should be written in English.

You are welcome to submit your application no later than February 17 2021. UFV-PA 2021/402.
