The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad, and distinguished molecular bioscience departments in Europe. The department comprises six research programs with about 130 employees. Please read more at http://www.icm.uu.se.
The position is within the research group of Johan Elf at the program of Molecular Systems Biology. The Elf group works across the borders of conventional research disciplines to investigate life at the molecular level. We build physical models of central biological processes and develop different methods to test these models in living cells. Please see http://elflab.icm.uu.se/ for more information about our activities.
Project description: The Ph.D. project is part of a large effort funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation, to investigate the search kinetics of DNA interacting proteins. In this project, we try to understand how a DNA binding molecule can find one specific DNA sequence within minutes among the vast pool of similar sequences that make up the genome. This specific Ph.D. project will investigate how a DNA-binding protein interacts with different DNA sequences by large-scale microscopy screening.
Work duties: The Ph.D. student shall primarily focus on postgraduate studies. Duties related to teaching and administrative work may be included in the work description, but should not exceed 20 % of the work hours. Information about doctoral education, eligibility requirements, and admission rules can be found at the faculty website, http://www. teknat.uu.se/utbildning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva/.
Requirements: The applicant must have a master's degree in Biotechnology/Biophysics or within another subject which the employer considers equivalent. He or she should have experience with molecular biology, microscopy, programming (e.g., MATLAB and Python), and image analysis. The applicant must have a good ability to work independently as well as in a group. Good written and oral knowledge of English is a prerequisite, as the work is conducted in an international environment.
Additional qualifications: Experience with molecular cloning and/or microfluidic techniques is desirable but not required to be considered for the position.
The application: Your application must include
• A cover letter where you describe yourself, your research interest, your experiences and why you are interested in the position (max. 2 pages).
• A CV containing your education, list of publications and other qualifications, and copies of diplomas.
•Please provide contact information to reference persons and/or recommendation letters from prior research supervisors.
