Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department"s programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography.

Duties: As Ph. D. candidate, you will work within the frame of the ITN project: “European weather Extremes: DrIvers, Predictability and Impacts”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 956396 and headed by Uppsala University. You will be part of a leading cohort of early-career researchers studying different aspects of climate extremes in Europe, from atmospheric dynamics to public health and agricultural impacts, and will have access to a rich programme of training activities and research exchanges. These are designed to enhance your career prospects in both academia and the private sector. You will also be affiliated to the Centre for Natural Disaster Science, CNDS.

Your work will focus on using Global climate models for evaluating the atmospheric rivers. Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow bands of large integrated water vapour transport in the troposphere. At landfall they are often associated with extreme winds and precipitation. This PhD-project aims to understand how air-sea interactions can modulate the occurrence and characteristics of atmospheric rivers, in terms of both open-water processes in the source areas of the rivers and of coastal processes at landfall. You will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching/supervising and other duties at the department, which may extend the position up to 20% of full-time equivalent. As part of the project, you will be required to complete international secondments and attend international meetings, subject to health and travel advisories.

Requirements: A Master’s or corresponding degree in Meteorology, Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, or related disciplines preferably obtained no later than one month before starting date. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. In accordance with MSCA rules, applicants must not have resided and not have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date – unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention. The applicant at the time of recruitment must be in their first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of research career and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree. The research career is counted from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate.

Additional qualifications: Good computing and programming skills are a merit. The ranking of the candidates will also accord weight to evidence of analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. Experience in private sector employment in fields relevant to the position will also be positively evaluated.

The application should contain:

  • A Curriculum Vitae.
  • A verified list of course grades.
  • A cover letter stating your scientific interests and what motivates you to apply for this position.
  • Your degree project/thesis (finished or in draft form).
  • Contact details (incl. email and telephone number) of two references.

The candidates will be short listed basted on the materials in the application, the top ranked candidates will be interviewed digitally and the references will be collected.
