The Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS) is a division within the Department of English. The institutes primary aim is to drive research and teaching within the field of American studies, primarily on the United States. We apply broad humanities and social studies perspectives to American social life, history and culture and have a special research profile in Swedish-American relations.
SINAS runs undergraduate courses in American studies, and organizes public lectures, conferences and seminars aimed at spreading knowledge about and creating interest for the field in Sweden. Furthermore, the institute is a forum for communication and outreach with broader society.
Duties: Primary duties include: teaching of courses in American Studies and potentially other courses within the Department of English; independent research within American Studies; responsibility for the development of SINAS’s teaching and research profile; collaboration and outreach with broader society. The successful applicant is expected to participate actively and regularly in all SINAS’s activities.
Eligibility: Applicants are eligible for employment as Senior Lecturer if they hold a doctoral degree in humanities or social studies specializing in American Studies. The applicant will have completed training in tertiary-level teaching or acquired equivalent knowledge, and have a demonstrated competence in teaching. The ability to teach in English is a requirement. Good interpersonal skills and a documented ability to cooperate with colleagues is a requirement.
Commendable attributes: Experience of interdisciplinary work, documented initiative in the development of the field of American studies and experience in outreach to broader society will all be afforded weight in the assessment of candidates. Particular weight will be given to candidates whose merits align with SINAS’s profile. Documented administrative experience, such as course coordination and research administration, are meritorious.
Assessment criteria: In ranking of eligible applicants, equal weight will be accorded to research and teaching competence. Research qualifications must be in the field of American Studies.
In appointing a person to this academic post, priority will be given to the applicant who, after a holistic assessment of competence and skills, is judged, alongside documented qualifications, to possess the greatest potential for performing and further developing the relevant duties and contribute to the positive development of the working environment.
