The Department of Linguistics and Philology is involved in research and education in a number of languages and language-related subjects and provides an international work environment. The department’s activities cover many of the classical and modern languages and cultures in large areas of Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as computational and general linguistics. Education is offered at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

Context: The position is part of the research project “Himalayan linguistic prehistory in a new light” (Swedish Research Council 2021–2023), under the supervision of professor Anju Saxena. This project aims at advancing our knowledge about the genealogical and areal factors that have shaped the prehistory of a number of Sino-Tibetan languages spoken in India and Nepal, in order to increase our knowledge about the genealogical composition of this language family.

Duties: The duties include collection and preliminary analysis of information about selected linguistic features from secondary sources, data entry and processing using FLEx databases, and production and presentation of analysis results (including preparation of digital maps showing the geographical distribution of linguistic features).

Requirements: The employment requires at least a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics as well as competence in grammatical analysis of linguistic structure documented e.g. in academic course papers and/or theses. Attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as a member of a team are necessary for carrying out the duties of the position.

Additional qualifications: The following qualifications are considered merits, and will be taken into account when assessing applicants (must be accompanied by relevant documentation submitted with the application):

  • Experience of work with the language documentation software FLEx
  • Experience of work with geographical information systems, in particular ArcGIS
  • Experience of linguistic fieldwork
  • Theoretical or practical knowledge of one or more South Asian languages
  • Experience of writing scientific articles

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 2021-03-01 or as otherwise agreed.

Duration: Temporary position for one year.
