Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The department and the project ViEWS; a political Violence Early-Warning System, is now seeking a research assistant (RA) for a temporary employment within the project. ViEWS started up in January 2017 with funding from the European Research Council (ERC) and will run through 2021. The project applies statistical methods to estimate the probabilities of the three types of violence coded by the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP). ViEWS provides monthly assessments on the risk of violence in Africa. The project is described in detail at http://www.pcr.uu.se/research/views/.


Expected tasks:

  • Advanced data collection and data analysis
  • Routine administrative/project management
  • Workshop assistance and miscellaneous writing tasks
  • Contact with policy-makers and users of the ViEWS system
  • Financial administration of research/ERC projects
  • Editing ViEWS newsletters
  • The research assistant will also be working on a country expert survey
  • The research assistant will report to the project leader, and work closely with other research assistants and researchers within ViEWS.

 
Qualifications and required skills:

  • We believe that a master's degree in pease and conflict studies, or related field, is needed to guarantee an advanced understanding of theories and concepts concerning war and peace, as well as an in-depth understanding of the research process
  • Knowledge and experience of R and Latex
  • Excellent proficiency in English (both reading and writing)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience in writing concise and informative literature reviews, with high standards for detailed documentation and attribution of sources
  • Experience with survey methods
  • Experience in writing applications for research grants
  • Experience with data management plans
  • Knowledge of the legal implications of working with, and hiring within, an ERC-funded project
  • Attention to detail and exactness, analytical and problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal abilities are of high importance.

Merit: Fieldwork experience and knowledge of programming (python), knowledge of UCDP and previous experience with web presentation and CMS.
