Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest department at Uppsala University with around 400 employees and 11 different departments, with its premises in the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. One of the department's divisions is the FREIA divisiont, which hosts a laboratory that conducts research on and development of future particle accelerators, with special focus on the European Spallation Source (ESS), the high-luminance upgrade of the LHC at CERN, and free electron lasers and ultra-fast electron diffraction instruments (UED) in Uppsala.

Project description: For the ESSnuSB project at ESS in Lund, the purpose of which is to generate and detect neutrino oscillations using a unique intense neutrino beam, an accumulator ring for protons is required. The neutrino beam will be generated using the ESS 2.5 GeV 5 MW linear accelerator, the accumulator ring and a neutrino beam target. The purpose of the accumulator ring, which is planned to be about 400 m in circumference, is to accumulate the 3 ms long pulse from the ESS accelerator during many revolutions and then extract it during one revolution in order to obtain a beam pulse that is only 1.3 µs long, which is required for the neutrino measurements.

Duties: The employment includes design, simulation and analysis of the function of the accumulator ring as well as planning work in collaboration with industrial companies and ESS. The design project is already well advanced and a year of further work is expected to remain, especially with the detailed design of the accumulator ring collimators, with the use of a laser to remove the two electrons of the H- ions to be injected into the accumulator ring from the accelerator, with the mechanical design in collaboration with the industry of magnets, collimators and vacuum tubes of the accumulator ring and with the planning of how the accumulator ring will be installed underground in the ESS area in Lund.

Qualification requirements: Doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications, or a foreign degree that is judged to correspond to a doctoral degree in accelerator physics. Knowledge of design of accumulator rings using design and simulation tools for beam dynamics calculations is a requirement. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as independence. The candidate must have a very good ability to express himself in English, both orally and in writing.

Merit: Previous experience in the design of accumulator rings for protons and H- ions using design and simulation tools is particularly meritorious.

Instructions for the application: The application must contain 1) a letter of max 1 A4 that describes yourself, your research interests, why you want the position and why you are suitable for the position, 2) your CV, 3) a short description of your education, 4) names and contact details of at least two reference persons (e-mail address and telephone number) and 5) relevant publications.
