Postdoctoral position in cancer and diabetes epidemiology - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) is part of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. IKV has about 120 employees and 200 registered doctoral (third cycle) students, the majority of which are clinically active doctors and nurses. The yearly turnover is SEK 152 million. Research is conducted at the department, as well as teaching in the first, second and third cycles. Teaching is, among other areas, conducted within the education programmes for doctors, nurses and specialty nurses. Research is conducted in research groups organised according to surgical specialties and closely aligned subject areas, such as anaesthesia and intensive care and radiology. A great deal of research is conducted in cooperation between separate research groups within IKV and other departments at Uppsala University, as well as other universities in Sweden and the rest of the world. Many of the department's employees have combined positions at the University Hospital. The EpiHub is a network for epidemiology research within the Disciplinary domain of Medicine and Pharmacy at Uppsala University and IKV.

IKV hereby announces a postdoctoral position in cancer and diabetes epidemiology, at The Epihub. This is a temporary full-time employment for two years.

Project description: Together, cancer and diabetes create a dual burden of disease with a substantial impact on individuals and society. Lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, have been associated with risk of both cancer and diabetes. However, lifestyle factors are typically difficult to study at a population level and in existing studies data on lifestyle factors are often only collected at one point in time. These studies therefore cannot provide an answer to the clinically important question of whether individuals can improve their prognosis by changing their lifestyle from before to after a cancer diagnosis. The aim of this project is to use longitudinal nationwide Swedish register data to evaluate characteristics, determinants and consequences of (change in) physical activity in individuals with cancer and diabetes. This work will inform the development of future interventions and clinical guidelines aiming to support cancer patients, identify target populations who may particularly benefit from such interventions and guidelines, improve health outcomes, and reduce socioeconomic inequalities in cancer prognosis.

Duties: Your role will be to use nationwide population-based register data to evaluate characteristics, determinants and consequences of (change in) physical activity in individuals with cancer and diabetes. The work tasks include independent statistical analysis, data-management, drafting of articles, and presenting the results at conferences. The tasks also include collaboration with other researcher.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must hold (or expect to receive before the intended date of employment) a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a similar relevant subject. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

You are required to have a strong interest and background in epidemiology and/or biostatistical methods, expertise in epidemiologic study design and previous knowledge of and experience in independently programming statistical analyses of epidemiological data. You are expected to have documented skills in data management, statistical analysis and modelling (Stata, SAS, and/or R). Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral and written communication skills in English is also required.

To succeed in the role you need to have a collaborative, detail-oriented and professional nature. Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise your own tasks is also required. 

Additional qualifications: It is desirable that you have prior experience of analysing Swedish register data and prior experience of physical activity and/or cancer and/or diabetes-related research.

It is considered a merit if you have prior experience of working with longitudinal data, trajectory analysis, survival modelling and/or mediation analysis.
