The Department of Government (http://statsvet.uu.se) provides a vibrant and internationally successful research environment. With approximately 60 faculty members and 40 PhD-students, we are recognized as one of the leading political science departments in the Nordic region.

The holder of the position will be employed at IRES but conduct their doctoral studies at the Department of Government. The PhD student will have a supervisor at both the Department of Government as well as at IRES.

Duties/Project description: Employed doctoral students must primarily devote their time to their own degree work and dissertation research. Other departmental duties may also be included in the position, such as, teaching or administrative tasks, but at no more than 20% of the workload. The duration of employment will be extended for a period corresponding to the time dedicated to the departmental duties.

The doctoral project has to be focused on Russian politics and social life, with a focus on political theory and / or institutional theory. We expect the doctoral project to be devoted to the study of, for instance, Russian political ideas, processes or institutions and their exercise of power.

General Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible, applicants must hold an advanced level graduate degree (Master’s degree equivalent or higher), fulfilled course requirements for at least 240 ECTS points, of which, at least 60 ECTS points must have been completed at an advanced level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

For special eligibility for admission to the doctoral studies program in political science, the applicant is required to have satisfactory results in courses equivalent to 90 ECTS points in political science. Special eligibility is also granted to anyone who has otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

A requirement for employment as a doctoral student is that the applicant must have been or will be admitted to the department’s doctoral studies program, where the aptitude to successfully complete the PhD program is crucial. Employment of doctoral students and admittance to the doctoral studies program are regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance, and the regulations issued by Uppsala University http://regler.uu.se. The qualification requirements must be met by the application deadline.

Good knowledge of Russia and the post-Soviet society as well as of Russian language is of particular merit. Good ability to express oneself in English in both speech and writing is necessary.

  6. A self-reflection statement on the applicant’s designated theses or articles where she/he discusses its main strengths and weaknesses (max. 1000 words).
  7. Certified transcripts of academic records (to demonstrate qualification for admission).

Salary: According to the local collective bargaining agreement for PhD students.
