Here, education in the areas of game development and game design is provided, and research focusing on basic issues in game design is under way.

The Department offers education in the principal area of game design, with four Bachelor (BA) degree programmes (Game Design, Game Design and Graphics, Game Design and Programming, and Game Design and Project Management) and a Master (MA) degree programme in Game Design. The Department also offers freestanding courses in game design, graphics and game programming.

Project description: The Games & Society Lab at the department of game design is looking for a research assistant (RA) to support the “transformative play” initiative, which involves the development of an advanced educational program as well as various research projects revolving around the transformative power of game design as process and (live action) role-playing games.

Tasks: The RA will work closely with Games & Society lab director and be an integral part of the lab’s research community. The RA will help identify and contribute to the development of specific research projects that investigate the potential of (live action) role playing games for personal, social and structural insight and transformation. The RA is expected to help build the lab’s network in the area of transformative play, and contribute to sketching out the national and international landscape of (live action) role playing games particularly in regards to their uses beyond entertainment. The RA is expected to engage in theory building, application of theory to practical design project as well as help develop methods for the assessment of impact. The RA should be willing and able to contribute to identifying funding opportunities and co-author grant proposals. Participating in regular research meetings, good communication, collegiality and continuous progress reports are required components of this appointment.

Qualification Requirements: You have at least a bachelor degree in game design or related field relevant for the tasks.You have good communication and collaboration skills as well as very good speaking and writing skills.

Additional research experience within or outside the university context (e.g. private sector) in regards to game design as (transformative) process and / or (live action) role playing games for purposes beyond entertainment is highly desirable. The position emphasizes substantial practical experience as well in the use and design of role-playing games as transformational tools (e.g. in the context of social work, counseling, spiritual direction or education) as well as their practical implementation. Project management experience, including experience setting up, running and debriefing live action role playing games of various sizes is meritable.
