Subject description/research project: Single-entity electrochemistry (SEE) is an emerging field with the great potential for fundamental understanding of stochastic processes and ultra-sensitive analysis. SEE is based on measuring an electrochemical signal from a single entity (a cell, a particle, or a single molecule). The project focuses on analysis of redox proteins and aims to develop a new experimental platform for detection of electron transfer from single redox proteins. Electron transfer reactions, executed by redox proteins, are an essential part of many important biological processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and DNA synthesis. Moreover, several human diseases, such as Alzheimer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers, have been associated with malfunctioning redox proteins. Today, fluorescence and force spectroscopies are primarily used for studies of redox proteins at the single-molecule level. In contrast, electrochemical measurements, which are particularly suitable for electron transfer reactions as they probe the electron transfer process directly, are much less studied.

Work duties: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

• has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
• has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements:

• Degree or equivalent as above in Electrochemistry, Physical Chemistry, or related field.
• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme. 

Additional requirements: Practical experience in electrochemistry, bioelectrocatalysis, single-entity electrochemistry and/or microfabrication techniques will be beneficial.

Terms of employment: The rules about PhD students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§1-7 and the university's rules and guidelines.
