National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) is looking for a web developer with an emphasis on frontend development. The position is located at Navet, the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) node at Uppsala university, in Uppsala, Sweden. The person will be employed by the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) but affiliated with NBIS and SciLifeLab.

ICM is one of the most international, broad and prominent biomolecular institutions in Europe. The department's research areas are divided into seven research programs, covering everything from cell biology to the biophysics of individual molecules.

NBIS is a national collaboration whose purpose is to provide support for bioinformatics and infrastructure to life science researchers. NBIS is also the Swedish node in the European infrastructure ELIXIR for biological data. NBIS has about 90 experts spread across the country, working in various fields, such as analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins, systems biology, genetic analysis, mass spectrometry proteomics, and metabolomics.  NBIS also provides support in system development and data management.

Duties: With us, you'll be working with agile development of software solutions and with user interfaces unique to the field of bioinformatics.  In this role, you will be responsible for the initial and continued development of web frontends. Your work will be creative and include supporting researchers with innovative solutions.

Here you will be working closely with other developers, both locally and internationally. You will also be in contact with researchers and other experts in bioinformatics. Your main task will be the development, maintenance, and management of the internal and external web systems of NBIS, as well as resolving incoming inquiries from various research groups. You will also participate in contacts with both internal and external users, teach, and contribute to the development of specification of requirements, MVP, estimation of time required, testing, and documentation.  In addition, you will be driving the development of guidelines and frameworks for frontend development in NBIS.

Requirements: As an applicant, you will have at least a bachelor's degree in information technology, computer technology, computer science, systems science, or bioinformatics, or documented equivalent competences in one or more of these areas.

Further requirements:

  • Several years of documented experience of system development or web development.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in using, at least one JavaScript framework, such as React, Angular, Vue.js, or Svelte.
  • Knowledge of, and experience of, user interaction design, with a focus on usability (UX) and graphic design (UI).
  • Experience of the Git version control utility.
  • Accustomed to using Linux and/or other Unix-like operating systems.
  • Able to express yourself fluently in English, both in speech and in writing.

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The applicant shall have the ability to work well together in teams. You should show initiative and have good interpersonal- and communication skills. As a person, you should be flexible, creative, and service-oriented. You should also be quality-conscious and goal-oriented.

Additional qualifications: We would like the applicant to have experience of working with standards for information security and systems for sensitive data. In addition to this, the following are considered as meritorious:

  • Accustomed to working in physically distributed teams with communication and coordination via electronic tools, such as video conferencing and the like.
  • Knowledge of TypeScript.
  • Experience of agile development according to e.g. Kanban or SCRUM.
  • Accustomed to working in close collaboration with customers.
  • Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and of guidelines for web development in the public sector.
  • Knowledge of back-end technologies, such as Flask, Django, or Wordpress.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: As soon as possible or agreed on.
