Project description: This is a fully funded 2-year position in the group of Assistant Professor Elina Immonen. The aim of the project is to experimentally examine how sexually antagonistic and sex-limited selection affect the genetic architecture of a polygenic trait during the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The postdoc fellow will utilize replicated artificial selection lines in a seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus to test for allele frequency changes in a time series associated with an increase or decrease in sexual size dimorphism. The lines were selected for ten generations and show rapid evolution of size and size dimorphism. Our earlier work based on pedigree analysis also reveals both sex-specific and shared genetic architecture of body size. The aims for this project include identifying the loci underlying the observed rapid evolution of dimorphism through testing for allele frequency changes over time, and comparing gene expression differences between the sexes in the different selection lines. We are also specifically interested to test whether sexually antagonistic selection can maintain genetic variation while allowing phenotypic dimorphism to evolve. This will be achieved by using pool-seq and RNA-seq technologies and the genome assembly (based on PacBio and Hi-C data) already available for the species.

Duties: Prepare DNA extractions for sequencing from available material, bioinformatic analysis of DNA and RNA-seq data. Analysis and writing of manuscripts based on the goals of the project.

Qualifications required: For this position the candidate must hold a PhD degree in evolutionary biology, genetics/genomics or bioinformatics.The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Experience in analyses of next-generation sequencing data is necessary, as is a background in population genetics/genomics. We value personal qualities such as collaboration skills, ability to work independently, problem solving skills, ability to prioritize and bring effectively projects to conclusion, as well as scientific maturity and creativity. Candidates must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 2021-03-01, or as agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position for 24 months, according to central collective agreement.
