Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department"s programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science, LUVAL, encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography.

Duties: This exciting position covers a variety of tasks across the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS, www.cnds.se) and the European Weather Extremes: Drivers, Predictability and Impacts consortium (EDIPI, www.edipi-itn.eu). Over the course of the employment, on average 60% of the time will be devoted to CNDS tasks and 40% to EDIPI tasks.

CNDS is a national centre for research on natural hazards, with several participating institutions including Uppsala University, the Swedish Defence University and Karlstad University. The centre has approximately 80 affiliates and a turnover of 13 million SEK per year. EDIPI is a large consortium comprised of 20 European universities, research centres and private companies, who will hire 14 doctoral students. All students will work on projects related to European weather extremes in present and future climates. The consortium will kick off in early 2021 with a budget of almost 40 million SEK. Both CNDS and EDIPI are coordinated from the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, where you will be based.

As part of the position, you will coordinate CNDS’ and EDIPI’s activities and identify the need for work efforts to achieve their goals. Together with the CNDS and EDIPI management, you will be responsible for overall follow-ups of the two initiatives, planning and conducting scientific conferences and training events and working with different types of internal and external reporting. You will further participate in research applications and be responsible for parts of these. Finally, you will coordinate and participate in CNDS and EDIPI internal and external meetings, as well as working with the respective websites and social media platforms, where a major initial focus will be on restructuring the websites to ensure optimal accessibility.

The tasks within this position will be shared between CNDS and EDIPI and the number of assignments will vary over time. It is therefore necessary that you are flexible in nature and are able to be responsible for both parts in parallel.

Requirements: To qualify for this position you need to have a Master’s degree or equivalent, and experience of working in research environments. Well-documented administrative capabilities, including documented experience of working with web publishing and text production on the web with good knowledge of InfoGlue, Wordpress or similar publishing tools. Furthermore, fluency in Swedish and English, both spoken and written, is required.

Additional qualifications: You will have the ability to build a bigger picture from the details, and prioritize among tasks. You are organised and find a varied job stimulating. As a person, you are open to a very wide network of contacts (researchers, doctoral students and administration) and are easy to work with. It is important that you are a self-driven problem solver, a good organizer and communicator and have a results-oriented approach. You are an experienced writer of both scientific and popular science texts, with the ability to break down complex information to plain language and communicate it in both Swedish and English to different target groups. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. Previous experience in coordinating projects and/or working in academic environments will be evaluated positively, as will experience in doctoral training.
