Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time employment for two years starting 2021-02-01 or by agreement

The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials (NFM) is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ångström Laboratory. Researchers at NFM have extensive experience in energy storage, biocompatibility, nanosafety, additive manufacturing, as well as the development of functional porous materials for various application areas, such as for drug delivery, gas separation, water purification and catalysis.

The position available is placed with the research group of Dr. Ocean Cheung. The group’s research focus is on the development of porous materials for a wide range of applications, including gas separation, water treatment, catalysis, drug delivery and many more. We have strong competence in the synthesis and optimisation of a wide range of porous materials, including porous oxides, zeolites, metal-organic framework (MOF), Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) etc.

Work duties: Planning and carrying out research project on the synthesis of existing and novel porous materials and functionalization of porous materials. Characterisation of porous materials including structural determination by X-ray diffraction/scattering techniques, IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), gas adsorption, liquid/solid state NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Optimisation of porous materials for greenhouse gas (i.e. CO2, SF6) separation and/or heterogeneous catalysis.

You are expected to conduct high-quality research and be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with other doctoral students and researchers in the group in a collaborative and supportive environment. Opportunities to explore new ideas related to the research area through discussions with other group members are strongly encouraged. Part of the work will be carried out in collaboration with national and international collaborators.

Qualification requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

This position requires a doctoral degree in chemistry, materials science or closely related disciplines.

We require that you have the knowledge and skills required to conduct scientific work to develop porous materials for various applications, and that you have good laboratory skills and experience of relevant methods for synthesis and characterization of porous materials. All such competence must be documented.

Furthermore, you are required to have the ability to plan and conduct scientific projects in a structured and methodical way. You must also be able to present your research to a wide audience. We also require good oral and written skills in English.

Additional qualifications: We require documented knowledge and experience in the synthesis and characterization of porous materials, such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), inorganic oxides or similar materials. We require good laboratory skills and experience regarding the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibration spectroscopy (eg IR and Raman).

Application procedure: The application should include:

  • Cover letter (including a brief description of the applicant’s research/career vision)
  • A brief description of your experience and competence with relevant characterisation techniques
  • CV (max 2 pages)
  • List of publications
  • PhD certificate and official transcript of studies at degree level and above.
  • A short description (of maximum 300 words) of the applicant’s PhD thesis,
  • If available, an electronic version of the applicant’s PhD thesis (or a web-link)
  • Contact information (including their relationship to you) of at least two reference persons.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 2021-02-01 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position two years according to central collective agreement.

Scope of employment: 100%
