Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. The department hosts a dynamic research milieu and is internationally oriented. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and some 300-400 students from around the world are enrolled every academic year. For the department and for three of our research projects, we are now looking for a postdoctor for a full time employment (24 months), starting 1 February 2021.

Work description
The position will be based at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University. The postdoctor will conduct research on political violence in Côte d’Ivoire, with a particular focus on electoral violence and the legacies of armed conflict on social and political developments in urban areas.

The position is co-funded by the following three projects:

1) The Continuation of Conflict-related Violence in Postwar Cities (led by Emma Elfversson), which analyses why and how violence continues and concentrates in postwar cities, and includes Abidjan as a case study.

2) Electoral Violence and the Consequences for Democratization (led by Hanne Fjelde), which examines the legacies of electoral violence for political development.

3) Alliances of Anarchy: Actor Constellations and Patterns of Electoral Violence (led by Kristine Höglund), which investigates the patterns and causes of electoral violence with a focus on actors constellations, and includes Côte d’Ivoire as a case study.

The postdoctor will conduct quantitative and qualitative research on Côte d’Ivoire and will, together with other team members, analyze causes and consequences of violence and disseminate results through conference participation and publications. The work is largely independent but also consists of co-authoring academic articles. The position might include teaching up to 20% at the Department.

Requirements:
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in peace and conflict research. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Furthermore, the position requires advanced knowledge of qualitative methods including research interviews; good knowledge of quantitative methods; substantial knowledge of Ivorian politics and of Abidjan as a case, including subnational variation in political violence, the role of postwar legacies and state and non-state institutions; fluency in English (writing and speaking); good cooperative skills, and ability to work both independently and in a team.

Meritorious
Experience of fieldwork in conflict-affected settings. Experience of fieldwork and data collection in Africa, particularly in Côte d’Ivoire. Knowledge of French or other locally relevant language skills.
