Duties/Project description: The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing domains of societal and industrial importance such as healthcare, aerospace, critical infrastructure monitoring, and process control. Currently most IoT devices are battery-powered which has several drawbacks including the cost for the replacement of batteries and chemical waste. We are about to start a new 5-year project that aims to make the IoT battery-free. To achieve battery-free operations we aim at pushing support for ultra-low power networking and other communication-related functionality down to the instruction set of a purposely-designed microcontroller unit. The PhD work will be supervised by advisors with leading expertise in low-power networking and computer architecture.

Requirements (PhD position): The candidate must have a Master of Science in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. The ideal candidate for the position has a solid background ideally in both low-power communication and networking as well as computer architecture. We are looking for a student who has demonstrated the ability to do research, as seen through his/her MS thesis, and has good programming/implementation skills. As for all PhD students, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and as well as analytical and communication skills, both oral and written, are required.

Application: The application should include a description of yourself, your research interests, reasons for applying for this particular PhD position and past experience (max. 3 pages), a CV, copies of relevant university degrees and transcripts, relevant publications, a copy of your MSc thesis (or a summary in case the thesis is ongoing) and other relevant documents (eg, TOEFL test results). Candidates are encouraged to provide up to 3 letters of recommendation and contact information to reference persons. We would also like to know your earliest possible date for starting.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.
