Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 250 employees and has a turnover just over 250 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website

In the research program Physical Chemistry we conduct fundamental and goal oriented research in colloid and surface science, photochemistry and chemical dynamics, laser spectroscopy, as well as molecular and mesoscopic systems for solar energy conversion.

We are now looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join one of our research groups in colloid and surface science.

Description of research project:The group conducts research focused on fundamental studies and bioanalytical/pharmaceutical applications of soft surfaces and nanoparticles formed by polar lipids. The projects are as a rule inspired by issues of biological or medical/pharmaceutical relevance. Ongoing studies include investigations to reveal mechanisms and factors that govern or influence stability and permeability of lipid membranes. Projects of more applied character aim at the development of liposomes and related lipid-based nanoparticles for formulation and delivery of different classes of anticancer agents. The research is often carried out in national or international collaboration with partners within the fields of pharmacy or medicine

Work duties: The objective of the postdoctoral project, funded by the Swedish Cancer Society, is to explore the potential of a novel type of lipid-based nanocarriers for tumour targeted delivery of chemotherapeutics, anticancer peptides, and therapeutic radionuclides. Specific tasks for the postdoc will include development of methods for production and drug loading of the nanocarriers, as well as studies of their interaction with, and cytotoxic effect on, tumour cells. The tasks may also include pharmacokinetic investigations and studies focused on biodistribution of the carriers and their drug load.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.

Requirements: For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of chemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine or technology, or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, in trade unions, etc.

The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance is attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the amount of publications.

Documented experience of in vitro cell studies is required. The applicant must have good communication skills and be proficient in both oral and written English. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional requirements: Documented experience of in vivo animal studies and work with radiation-based techniques is beneficial. Previous experience of research concerning liposomes or related nanocarriers is desirable.

Salary: Individual pay.

Starting date: 2021-02-01

Type of employment: Temporary position for two years.

Scope of employment: 100 %
