Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology

The Department of Information Technology has a leading position in research and education. The Department currently has about 280 employees, including 120 teachers and 110 PhD students. More than 4000 students study one or more courses at the department each year. More info: http://www.it.uu.se

Description of the area: Internet-of-Things (IoT) is one of the fastest growing areas of Information Technology.  IoT devices are often used in distributed applications and they are typically wireless. Other common units in distributed applications include Clouds, Smartphones, Edge servers and regular computers, both wired and wireless. In order to make the applications reliable and cost effective there is research needed in balancing computing processing over the units with respect to real-time requirements, link bandwidths, available computing power, communication distance between units, security requirements and energy consumption. In our research we design and experimentally evaluate performance, energy efficiency and the communication safety of wireless systems for IoT units.

Research project: The Postdoc will the first year work in the ”Future Factory in the Cloud” (Fic) project, especially with real-time applications that are distributed over Cloud, Edge and IoT devices with local sensors and actuators. The application area is primarily: Future flexible manufacturing industries. The project is carried out together with Mälardalens Högskola and Chalmers Tekniska Universitet. In the project it is expected that results are demonstrated as prototypes for an industrial reference group.

Duties: The Postdoc will do research within the above mentioned project. Limited teaching in relevant and existing courses may be the case.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in information technology with a specialization in Distributed Systems. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Documented experiences and scientific publications from design, programming and experimental evaluation of distributed systems consisting of Clouds, local servers and IoT-devices in Internet/Intranet are required. Another requirement is a good handling of both written and spoken English.

Additional qualifications: Experiences from research collaboration with relevant industries.

Salary: Individual salary.
