Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - BMC

A position as a researcher in biochemistry, in the research group of Ylva Ivarsson is available in the program of Biochemistry, at the Department of Chemistry-BMC.

The world class research in biochemistry carried out at the Department of Chemistry – BMC is focused on issues related to the design and synthesis of biological macromolecules, analysis of the structure and dynamics of proteins and complex molecular systems, how biological function emerges and is regulated by molecular interactions. Fundamental studies of enzyme catalysis and metabolic pathways is complemented by applied research based on protein engineering and innovative strategies for drug discovery. The research is based on state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical approaches, ranging from physical-chemical approaches to 3D structural modelling and bioinformatics.

The Department of Chemistry-BMC is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from biochemistry, organic chemistry to analytical chemistry. For more information: www.kemi.uu.se/bmc/.

Project description: The research in the Ivarsson lab aims to elucidate protein-protein interactions of relevance for cell signaling and function. Our main focus is on interactions between short linear motifs (3-12 amino acids, found in the intrinsically disordered regions of proteins) and motif-binding proteins. We study both which interactions can happen in a healthy cell, and which interactions that occur during disease conditions.

Duties: You will conduct research at full time, and potentially help supervising younger students. The position will include expression and purification of recombinant proteins, and affinity measurements. Moreover, the position also includes cell based experiments. You may also be involved in some bioinformatic analysis. The position will include summarizing results and presenting them through oral and written presentations, including manuscript writing.

Qualifications required: A doctoral degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctoral degree, in with Biochemistry. You should have a strong background in biochemistry, with proven experience within the methods required to perform the duties, namely protein expression and purification, affinity measurements through MST and FP, cell based assays, microscopy and basic bioinformatics (e.g. network analysis using Cytoscape, GO term enrichment analysis).

In ranking eligible candidates special importance will be given to scientific skills. In the assessment of scientific merits, especially, proven experience of studying short linear motif based interactions through biochemical, biophysical and cell based experiments will be highly valued. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as the capacity to work independently as well as in a bigger group. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired: You should have experience of expressing and purifying protein, and conducting affinity measurements through methods such as FP and MST. It is qualifying to have experience of cell based experiments such as pulldowns and microscopy.

The project is focused on protein-protein interaction studies and how these regulate cell function. It is therefore desired that you have a general interest in cell signaling and the protein-protein interactions that regulate cell signaling. An interest in bioinformatics and network analysis of biological data is of added value.

Application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and why you want this position, 2) your CV, 3) a short description of your education, 4) a copy of your doctoral degree and course grades, 5) the names and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.), 6) a copy of your master thesis and 7) publications produced. The application should be written in English.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 2021-01-01, or as agreed.

Type of employment: The position is a temporary position until 2021-06-30.

Scope of employment: 100 %.
