Duties/Project description: Uppsala University within a national consortium of industry and academia is now beginning an exciting project that focuses on the next generation of sawmills: Better Sawing (stage 2), which is financed by Vinnova.

The aim of the project is to increase the amount of high-value products that can be industrially sawn from a tree trunk, and thus increase the profitability of sawmills.

Today's sawmills have a limited set of sawing patterns. The next generation of sawmills will have more degrees of freedom in all three dimensions. In order to utilise this freedom, a plan is required for each individual log on how it is to be sawn. The project's goal is to produce software in the form of an optimisation tool that calculates such a plan for any given log. This calculation is based on computed tomography data, which is available for each log. The calculated plans optimise the value of the sawn products. In order for the tool to be practically useful, requirements are set for the calculation time.

We are therefore looking for motivated applicants, with a PhD education related to combinatorial optimisation methods — including constraint programming, or integer programming, or ideally both — and one or more of the following areas:

  • algorithm design (at an advanced level)
  • computational geometry
  • machine learning
  • parallel programming

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Computer Science or Optimisation or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required.

The application must contain:

  1. A curriculum vitae (CV).
  2. A copy of relevant grade documents (translated into Swedish or English).
  3. A list of publication.
  4. Up to five selected publications in electronic format.
  5. A research statement describing your past and current research (max 1 page) and a proposal for future activities (max 1 page).
  6. Contact information for two references.
  7. A cover letter briefly describing your motivation for applying for this position and the earliest possible employment date (max 1 page).

Salary: Individual salary.
