Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

The PhD student positions will be placed at the Department of Ecology and Genetics. The institute is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world (www.ieg.uu.se). The PhD students will belong to the Limnology program, which engages in research and education on the ecology and biogeochemistry of inland waters, spanning from microscopic to global scale (www.ieg.uu.se/limnologi).

Project description: We are looking for two PhD students who will work with the effects of climate change on ice-covered lakes in the Northern Hemisphere. The main objective of the global research project is to assess how lake ice properties such as crystal structure, thickness and transparency will change in a warmer climate and how these changes will affect ice stability/safety as well as ecological and biochemical processes in different types of lakes. The project includes field, experimental and modeling work where one PhD student will focus on the physical and modelling aspects of the project and the other one on the ecological and biochemical aspects. Since the projects are of very high societal value they also include some outreach activities. The PhD students will work in a team together with researchers from Gothenburg University and experts in the national network SITES (www.fieldsites.se) and the international network GLEON (Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network, www.gleon.org).

Duties: Your duties include research based on field, experimental and modelling work, teamwork as well as some teaching and course work.

Qualification required:  To be eligible for a PhD-student position, the applicant must hold a master degree (or equivalent) in limnology, aquatic ecology, environmental sciences, geoscience, environmental engineering or other relevant subjects at the time of employment. Eligible candidates interested in the physical/modelling part of the project need to demonstrate skills in statistics/modelling while candidates interested in the ecological/biochemical part need to demonstrate skills in aquatic ecology or equivalent. For the project some experience in practical work such as field work or equivalent is required. Candidates must be able to express themselves to a very high degree in spoken as well as written English. In the evaluation of candidates, particular emphasis will be put on personal qualities such as independence, strong motivation and teamwork skills.

Qualifications desired: Previous experience with laboratory experiments. Willingness to work in a cold winter climate. Basic knowledge in GIS. Car driving license (EU class B).

How to apply: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and motivation of why you want to do a PhD, and why you are suitable for the position; you also need to write whether you are interested in the physical/modelling or the ecological/biochemical part of the project, 2) your CV, 3) a short description of your education, 4) a copy of your master degree, your course grades and a copy of your master thesis, 5) the names and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.), and 6) publications produced, if any. The application should be written in English.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: As soon as possible, or as otherwise agreed upon.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The position can be combined with teaching or other duties at the department (maximum 20%), which prolongs the employment with the corresponding time. The salary will be set according to local agreements. Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines.
