Uppsala University, Department of Electrical Engineering

Electrification and digitalisation are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 5G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 130 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.

The PhD student position will be at the division for electricity.

Project description: Today's power systems tend to be more and more complex and the development in the area will be large in the coming years. It faces a number of challenges such as the electrification of several sectors (vehicles, industries, etc.); an ongoing energy transition to renewable energy sources; and an increased shortage of capacity in most cities. A key point will be to ensure the reliability and stability of the power system.

In this project, we will use a real-time simulator to analyse different network topologies and operating scenarios. A real-time simulator makes it possible to connect real control systems to it and also in the long run test real hardware and examine how the system reacts during different operating cases and in the event of different disturbances. A major part of the project will be to build up this testbed and do various analyses.

We offer a varied and exciting work that is planned by the doctoral student and the research group together. The tasks may also include participation in teaching and other department work, however, a maximum of 20% of working hours. During your time as a PhD, you will work together with other PhD students and researchers at the department.

Duties: Perform network simulations with real-time simulator, test hardware and various control and management algorithms in the model. A large part of the work will be to conduct experiments for verifications of analytical models.

The main task for a doctoral student is to devote himself to his doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties. no more than 20%.

Employment benefits: Employment as a doctoral student are four years of full-time studies with the possibility of extension for special reasons. Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.
