The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).
The geophysics program: Seismic methods provide high-resolution images of the Earth's interior. The acquired data contain geometrical information on geological structure and on the physical properties of the materials that the seismic waves have propagated through. The Geophysics Program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, urban geophysics, geological storage of CO2, mineral exploration and geological modeling of major mineral belts, geohazards, development of electromagnetic and seismic instruments and methods for shallow and deep crustal studies. Research focus in the applied geophysics part is on
The geophysics program runs its own ~ 800-channel (cabled and 1C/3C wireless), a state-of-the-art 100-3C seismic landstreamer acquisition system, and uses modern processing and imaging software. It is also well equipped with modern downhole logging equipment.
Duties:
The PhD study will focus on seismic imaging of near surface structures both for engineering and groundwater exploration purposes. The work will include seismic method development, both in data acquisition and processing. The PhD candidate will conduct research within a group of planned projects sponsored by industry and research funding organizations. The candidate will interact closely with other researchers and PhD students in the department as well as with the research teams in different countries.
Requirements:
We are seeking a candidate with strong interest in research who has an academic magister/master- or engineering degree, or equivalent, in geophysics, physics, earth sciences or a similar field (formally, four years of university study including a minimum of 1 year at advanced level are required). Linux/Unix and programming skills; experience and knowledge on seismic data acquisition and processing are necessary. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The research will include significant fieldwork and the candidate will be spending time outdoors for data collection; a driving license is required.
Knowledge of Seismic Unix, GMT and shell scripts is a merit.
Application:
Applications must include a CV, certified copies of diplomas and transcripts, and a cover letter describing yourself and your relevant experience (maximum 2 pages). The application should also contain a summary of your master thesis and eventual publications, and contact information for, or letters from at least two referees. In your cover letter specifically explain how much seismic data processing knowledge you have.
Employment conditions:
The position is full-time for four years and may include up to 20% of research or teaching assistantship
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1. You can also read about Postgraduate studies at TekNat.
