Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM)

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University constitutes a broad international environment for research and education. Research at IMBIM is conducted within three collaborative and partially integrated sections: cancer, infections and immunity, and genetics and genomics. A more detailed description is available at https://www.imbim.uu.se/research-areas/.

Description of the field: The position as associate senior lecturer in experimental medical genomics is organised within the section for genetics and genomics. IMBIM has the aim to strengthen translational medical research tracks focusing on experimental methods developed by comparative genomic population data. Overall themes are genetic variation and molecular mechanisms in human disease. The research field is also expected to overarch to the research at the department's two other sections.

Job description: The position includes research, teaching and administration. A successful applicant is expected to conduct research with a strong experimental base that complements and reinforces ongoing research in the field. Duties include responsibility for development and delivery of teaching at the first, second and third cycle levels in the specific and adjacent research area. This also includes course coordination and administration. Administrative tasks and internal and external elected office may arise. It will also be required to follow development of the own field and any general societal development of significance to work at the University. The position as associate senior lecturer is intended to lead to a teacher employment with higher requirements on eligibility in terms of scientific and pedagogical skills.

Employment period: An appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a six-year career-development position; however, if extraordinary reasons exist, the appointment may be renewed. An associate senior lecturer may apply for promotion. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and meets the requirements for promotion, he or she shall be promoted and be employed for an indefinite period as a senior lecturer.

Eligibility: According to Chapter 4 Section 4a of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, a person qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a person who has been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for applications.

According to § 38 of the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, teaching expertise in accordance with § 23 of the Appointment Regulations is required. The applicant should have completed five weeks of relevant training in learning and teaching in higher education, or acquired equivalent knowledge by some other means. If it is not possible to acquire this qualification prior to appointment, the prerequisite course in learning and teaching in higher education must be completed during the first two years of employment.

The applicant shall have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. If exceptional reasons exist, an applicant who currently lacks the ability to teach in Swedish may be assumed to be able to acquire that ability within two years.

Assessment criteria: In selecting qualified applicants, greater importance will be placed on research expertise than on teaching expertise. Particular importance will be placed on the applicant’s capacity to contribute to the future development of both research and education.

In the assessment of research expertise, special emphasis will be placed on the applicant's ability to strongly contribute to the development of translational research in experimental medical genomics at IMBIM. This includes the feasibility to collaborate and contribute to department's overall research in order to deepen the understanding of molecular, cellular and immunological mechanisms in degenerative, infectious and malignant diseases in humans. In the assessment of research expertise, research quality shall be the primary consideration. The scope of the research, mainly depth and breadth, will also be given importance. Since an employment as an associate senior lecturer is a merit-based position with the possibility of promotion to senior lecturer within four years, particular consideration shall be given to the documented ability to, in competition, obtain research funding of special importance. Consideration will also be given the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and third-cycle studies and, as will the ability to interact with others both within academia and the wider community. Cf. §§ 20 and 21 of the Appointment Regulations and § 11 of the Guidelines and Assessment Criteria for Recruitment and Promotion within the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy.

In the assessment of teaching expertise, quality shall be the primary consideration. Scope, both in terms of breadth and depth, shall also be afforded consideration. The ability to relate teaching to current research will be given consideration. As IMBIM's teaching assignments include teaching at the Faculty of Medicine's education program, a medical degree and a PhD with a focus on medical research will be particularly meritorious. Cf. §§ 22, 23 and 38 of the Appointment Regulations and § 12 of the Guidelines and Assessment Criteria.

Administrative expertise is important to the position and will be afforded due consideration. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in an effective manner adapted to the task at hand, as well as the ability to allot and maintain time frames. Cf. §§ 28 and 29 of the Appointment Regulations and § 13 of the Guidelines and Assessment Criteria.

According to the Appointment Regulations for a position as an assistant senior lecturer, particular importance will be placed on the applicant’s overall qualifications to contribute to the future development of both research and education.

Whenever the University appoints a new teacher, the successful candidate will be the person who, based on a qualitative overall assessment of competence and expertise, is deemed to have the best conditions for carrying out and developing the duties in question and for positively contributing to the development of the organisation. Personal suitability will be afforded consideration.

All qualifications should be documented in a manner that allows an assessment of both quality and scope.

Personal circumstances (eg parental leave) that can be credited to the applicant in the merit evaluation should be stated in connection with the account of merits and experiences.

Applicants' parental leave, part-time work due to childcare or the like, will be considered as meritorious work experience.

Application consists of: Letter (1 page), CV, a brief written account of scientific, teaching and administrative activity, research plan (1-2 pages), a list of scientific and pedagogical publications, doctoral diploma, certificates and other documents refereed to in the application, publications in full text (at most 10).
