Uppsala University, Department of English

The Department of English contains five areas of specialization in both teaching and research: English Linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Irish language and Culture and SINAS, the Swedish Institute for North American Studies. Research at the department is conducted within all these areas. The doctoral program in English is divided into three sections, one specializing in English Linguistics, one specializing in English Literature, and one specializing in American Literature.

Research in American Literature and Culture includes all literatures and related disciplines produced on the territory of what is now the United States from colonial times to the present, along with the work of Americans abroad. Some recent and current research areas include American literature and globalization, transnational American literature, the literature and culture of neoliberalism, American literature and the security state, postwar avant-garde poetry and poetics, the environmental and energy humanities, the New American Cinema, punk rock, and Archipelagic American Studies.

Our doctoral students in the Department of English are integrated into our research environment. Further, doctoral students in the American Literature specialization have also joined national and international networks by attending conferences and summer schools, as well as spending periods as visiting scholars at universities abroad. Abstracts of recently completed doctoral theses are available online.

For this position, Uppsala University invites applicants for a doctoral position in English, specializing in American Literature. We are looking for a dynamic and committed scholar who works well independently and who is willing to cooperate in and to contribute to the community of researchers working in the department. We particularly encourage proposals on innovative American poetry and poetics (1945 – present), the postwar avant-gardes across two or more disciplines (e.g., literature, music, cinema), and the cross-fertilization of North American and European avant-garde poetry and poetics.

Qualifications: To be eligible to apply for the doctoral position, the applicant must have completed a Master’s Degree in English before the application date. We encourage applicants from all countries to apply. The doctoral dissertation is to be written in English.
