Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

The department and UCDP is now looking for a research assistant for a one year employment, starting 1 February 2021, or as otherwise agreed. 

Duties: The tasks consist of assisting the project management within the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), mainly with data management, including visualization. In addition, the employment will include coding of violent events from news articles and other sources into the UCDP's database as well as text writing to varying degrees.

Requirements: Applicants must have:

  • For an advanced understanding of theories and concepts concerning war and peace as well as an in-depth understanding of the research process, the position requires that the applicant have a master's degree in peace and conflict studies
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Independent analytical ability
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Previous experience of similar data collection work in the field of conflict
  • Experience in managing and working with completed conflict data, including data visualization.

Additional qualifications: Previous experience of working with, for example, Python or R.We will also look at personal suitability. Application; include a short personal letter, a CV, as well as copies of your diplomas and grades.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 February 2021, or as otherwise agreed.
