Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and distinguished molecular bioscience departments in Europe. The department comprises six research programs with about 130 employees (http://www.icm.uu.se). This PhD position will be in Prof. Anthony Forster's laboratory (https://www.icm.uu.se/molecular-biology/forster-lab/) within the Molecular Biology research program.

Duties/Project description: The Forster lab has published synthetic E. coli-based systems that revealed surprising properties, such as (i) unnatural amino acids with unexpected rate-limiting steps in ribosomal incorporation (translation), and (ii) small transcription terminators that functioned in vitro but not in vivo. The goal of this project is to elucidate the fundamental underlying mechanisms in prokaryotic transcription and translation, and exploit this knowledge for future engineering of bacterial systems.

The PhD student shall primarily focus on postgraduate studies, but other duties related to teaching and administrative work may be involved, up to a maximum of 20 % of the time. Information about doctoral education, eligibility requirements and admission rules can be found at the faculty website, http://www.teknat.uu.se/utbildning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva/.

Requirements: The applicant must have a Master's degree in biochemistry, biology or in another subject which the employer considers to be equivalent. The applicant must, for example, have good ability to work independently as well as in a group. A prerequisite is good written and oral knowledge in English, as the work takes place in an international environment.

Additional qualifications: Practical research experience and publications in prokaryotic transcription and translation are highly meritorious.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.

Your application must include:

  • A personal letter where you describe yourself, your research interest, your experiences and why you are interested (max. 1 A4 page).
  • A CV containing your education and other qualifications, copy of diplomas and list of publications.
  • Contact information for prior research supervisors.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: 01-01-2021 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.

Scope of employment: 100 %.
