Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology

The Department of Information Technology has a leading position in research and all levels of higher education. Today the department has 280 employees, including 120 academic staff and 110 full-time PhD students. The Department comprises research and education in a spectrum of areas within Scientific Computing, Image Analysis, Computer Science, and Information Technology. More than 4000 students take one or several courses offered by the Department each year.

The position is hosted by the Division of Scientific Computing within the Department of Information Technology. As one of the world’s largest focused research environments in Scientific Computing  the research and education has a unique breadth, with large activities in classical scientific computing areas such as mathematical modeling, development and analysis of algorithms, scientific software development and high-performance computing as well as in emerging areas such as cloud computing, data science, and artificial intelligence, where it plays key roles in several new strategic initiatives at the University.

Research project: You will be part of the Integrative Scalable Computing Laboratory research group, and join the HASTE project, an interdisciplinary project funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). The project aims at developing smart systems for processing and managing very large amounts of microscopy images in order to be able to leverage the imminent explosion of image data from modern experimental setups in the biosciences. One central goal is to prioritize data acquisition and analysis to certain regions/sections of data based on automatically obtained metrics for usefulness and interestingness. To arrive at such smart systems for scientific discovery in image data, we pursue a range of topics such as efficient data mining in image data, machine learning models with quantifiable confidence that learn an object’s interestingness. We are now looking for a researcher to work on research and development of intelligent stream data processing pipelines, and development of intelligent and efficient cloud systems capable of mapping data and compute to a variety of cloud computing and data storage e-infrastructure based on the quality and interestingness of the data.  Project partners are at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University, Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, Uppsala University, Vironova AB and AstraZeneca AB.  For more information, see the project homepage: http://haste.research.it.uu.se/ .

Duties: The position is focused on research in the described research project, and includes a limited amount of teaching and departmental duties, but not more than 20%.

Requirements: The candidate should have a PhD degree in Scientific Computing, Computational Mathematics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or a related field.
The successful candidate must have documented experience in applied distributed computing and cloud computing, large-scale data processing using clustered solutions such as Apache Spark or similar, and software engineering. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.  Further, the applicant should be able to work well in an interdisciplinary team as well as independently, and possess organizational skills and the ability to multitask in a high-pace environment.

Additional qualifications: Documented experience of research on data stream processing, computerized image processing and machine learning. Personal qualities such as dedication, motivation, initiative and independence are valued.

How to apply: The application should include a cover letter (no longer than 2 pages) including a biography including a summary of the doctoral work in relation to state-of-the art. The application should also contain a list of credentials (CV), copies of relevant certificates and grades, a list of publications and contact information to at least three reference persons.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Type of employment: Temporary position ending in 12 months.

Scope of employment: 100%
